Chill Out in the Chilterns
Want a family countryside day that is different. A day out that offers you ancient woodland, museums, historic houses and all in an outstanding area of real beauty?
With your guide for company they will drive you out of London and into the area of the Chilterns. We will visit Amersham, which is divided into two sections, Old Amersham and Amersham on the Hill. Old Amersham is described as a "charming old town".
Dating back to the 8th century The High Street is a picture postcard delight, with historic buildings covering a wide variety of architectural periods lining the walkways. There are rows of 17th and 18th century buildings, plus the town hall, rising on arches in the centre of the High Street. We will also get photos of small almshouses. You can visit the Martyrs' Memorial, which marks the spot where religious dissenters were burnt at the stake under Queen Mary.
There is time to visit the museum which is housed in a half-timbered merchant's hall dating from the 15th century. Inside the hall are exhibits tracing the history and archaeology of the area, including medieval wall paintings, lacemaking, costumes, fossils, and local crafts.
Leaving Amersham behind us we travel through the countryside and your guide will make suggestions for lunch in a 400 year old English pub, followed by a drive to the home of John Milton ( author of Paradise Lost) Now you can choose to visit one of the following: The Hell Fire Caves, Berkhamsted Castle, Chenies Manor (popular Choice) Cliveden House, Hughenden Manor, or Stonor Park.
